No such thing as “good” or “bad” choices

I WASTED SO MANY YEARS

Making the choices I thought other people would approve of and accept me for. Turns out, it was impossible to win that whack-a-mole game and only I ended up suffering. .

The truth about choices is…

IT DEPENDS - ON YOUR VALUES & PRIORITIES

There’s no such thing as objectively good or bad choices.

GASP! How dare I!

I know, I know. I can feel the collective glare of every parent, Sunday school teacher, and coach I’ve ever known.

But it’s true! There is no such thing as objectively good or bad choices. There’s no right choice or wrong choice — there’s just the choice you make.

Meaning, every choice can be perceived as good or bad depending on the perspective. Depending on the perceiver’s beliefs, values, and priorities.

For (benign) example, taking a bath. Some people see “good choice” because it’s luxurious smelling relaxation, rejuvenation, and undistracted self care. Other people see “bad choice” because it’s sitting in your own filth, wasting water, chemicals, and time.

Personally, I’ll pass. I’d rather not scrunch my tall body into the tub while my eyes discover every crevice I missed while cleaning last weekend and my mind scolds me about droughts. (Mind you, I live in a flood plain.) But my best friend isn’t herself without at least an hour a week in her eucalyptus scented bubbles with meditation music on. 🤷‍♀️

A bath is a good choice for her, and a bad choice for me. You get it - choices are not objective.

MAKE GOOD CHOICES - FOR YOU

No one else is waking up tomorrow living your life, running your business, or leading your team. Stop assessing your choices based on their opinions.

  1. Get clear on YOUR values.

  2. Get clear on YOUR long-term, big picture goals.

  3. Get clear on YOUR priorities in this season of life.

  4. Use these three answers to filter your choices.

    1. How does each option align or conflict with my values?

    2. Will each option get me closer to or further from my goals?

    3. How does each option contribute to or detract from my priorities right now in the immediate future?

  5. My personal bonus question and breaker of all ties: When I imagine myself living out each option, what does my gut tell me?

When you inevitably make a decision that others disagree with, notice how empowering it feels to just smile back at them, knowing full well this is a great decision for you.💪 😉

Choose yourself.

Choose YOUR values, YOUR goals, YOUR priorities.

🌿To your journey and mine… let’s choose for ourselves!
